Kim.kim - you got me there.

Heather - that is a very good point. Why is it automatically assumed to mean the opposite for another person? Probably that knee-jerk reaction as well.

Why do people think that a term for us implies the opposite term for others?

For example, if one assumes that natural parent will lead to unnatural parent

That first parent implies last (or second etc) parent

Then why doesn't birth parent lead to death parent?

Hey Dan, what the heck are you using to send email?

MaeDay- Thank you and I hope you had great Thanksgiving and that you and yours have a great rest of the year too.

Mia, Good point!!

Terri, calling a woman birthmom prior to the birth is definatly not right.

The longer the debate goes on, the more I don't care what I'm called so long as it's said with respectful intent (and it's not late for dessert!). Words are human creations. Love transcends them. Though I'm no big fan of birthmother (primarily because I was called one while I was simply a pregnant mom looking for parenting resources), I feel that any "new and improved" term will just get hijacked by people who profit from it. That said, I hear ya, it does get frustrating when you're trying to dialoge with somebody who is a member of a group that has different preferences: ie: Latino vs Hispanic, Native American vs. the particular tribe's name, black vs. African American.

I just ask the individual what they prefer, at this point, and go from there ... but it still makes referring to a group difficult.

I wonder if MaeDay meant that comment to be as profound as it was? You have heard me say if there could just be consistancy among the troops it would be easier to be respectful and I still think this is true.

A comment like MaeDay's sort of puts things in perspective doesn't it? Kind of gets to the meat of the matter without all of the inconsistancy clouding the issue.
